چکیده

Phylogenetic analysis of the mammalian and avian polyomaviruses was performed using the most complete set of publicly available polyomavirus genome sequences to date, including the newly discovered MW polyomavirus. There is no evidence for host-switching between mammalian and avian polyomaviruses, but there is extensive evidence for host-switching among mammalian polyomaviruses. Comparative genomic analysis focuses on primate polyomaviruses, and two specific genomic alterations are shown for Merkel cell polyomavirus and Trichodysplasia spinulosa-associated polyomavirus that may indicate a mechanism for primate host-switching for these two human polyomaviruses.

Discovery of a polyomavirus in European badgers (Meles meles) and the evolution of host range in the family Polyomaviridae

Polyomaviruses infect a diverse range of mammalian and avian hosts, and are associated with a variety of symptoms. However, it is unknown whether the viruses are found in all mammalian families and the evolutionary history of the polyomaviruses is still unclear. Here, we report the discovery of a novel polyomavirus in the European badger (Meles meles), which to our knowledge represents the firs...

Comparing phylogenetic codivergence between polyomaviruses and their hosts.

Seventy-two full genomes corresponding to nine mammalian (67 strains) and two avian (5 strains) polyomavirus species were analyzed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods of phylogenetic inference. Our fully resolved and well-supported (bootstrap proportions > 90%; posterior probabilities = 1.0) trees separate the bird polyomaviruses (avian polyomavirus and goose hemorrhagic polyomavirus)...

Characterization of California sea lion polyomavirus 1: expansion of the known host range of the Polyomaviridae to Carnivora.

The genome of a novel polyomavirus first identified in a proliferative tongue lesion of a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) is reported. This is only the third described polyomavirus of laurasiatherian mammals, is the first of the three associated with a lesion, and is the first known polyomavirus of a host in the order Carnivora. Predicted large T, small t, VP1, VP2, and VP3 genes w...

Breakdown of coevolution between symbiotic bacteria Wolbachia and their filarial hosts

Wolbachia is an alpha-proteobacterial symbiont widely distributed in arthropods. Since the identification of Wolbachia in certain animal-parasitic nematodes (the Onchocercidae or filariae), the relationship between arthropod and nematode Wolbachia has attracted great interest. The obligate symbiosis in filariae, which renders infected species susceptible to antibiotic chemotherapy, was held to ...

Polyomavirus BK and prostate cancer: an unworthy scientific effort?

The Polyomavirus BK (BKV) has been proposed to be one of the possible co-factors in the genesis of prostate cancer (PCa) but, so far, the only convincing suggestion is the hypothesis of a "hit and run" carcinogenic mechanism induced by the virus at early stages of this disease. To support this hypothesis we conducted an updated systematic review on previous studies regarding the association bet...
